Graston Technique ® (GT), a patented form of soft tissue mobilization, relies on specially designed stainless steel instruments. These instruments serve to locate and treat scar tissue and adhesions in connective tissue (fascial tissue) that typically result from some sort of trauma (injury or surgery).

While most are familiar with scar tissue, both adhesions and connective tissue are generally less familiar. Connective tissue surrounds every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel and organ in the body. Adhesions result when layers of connective tissue “stick” to one another rather than glide smoothly over one another.

Consequently, the presence of scar tissue or adhesions frequently restricts normal range of motion and thereby negatively affects function.

The stainless steel instruments used in GT come in a variety of shapes and sizes and have a variety of edges and angles. As a result, different instruments serve to treat different conditions. No matter what instrument is used, the objective is to “break up” scar tissue or adhesions. Due to this “break up” the body can reabsorb the defective tissue.

Graston Technique and Conditions Treated

It is common to find GT in use, either alone or in combination with other forms of manual therapy, when treating any of the following conditions.

ankle pain – wrist pain – neck pain – tennis elbow
back pain – golfer’s elbow – knee pain
foot pain – shoulder pain – shin splints – trigger finger
